Caring and Safe Relationships During Pregnancy and Post-Partum
Caring and Safe Relationships During Pregnancy and Post-Partum
How is it going in your relationship?
• Do I feel safe and respected?
• Can I take space from my partner, rest, and
connect with others?
• Are my choices about my body, parenting,
and future respected?
Relationships can be complicated. If something
doesn’t feel right, you don’t have to figure it
out alone.
Are things feeling unsafe or controlling? Partners doing
these things can impact your safety or wellbeing:
• Being put down, humiliated, or controlled
• Feeling afraid of your partner’s reactions
• Being pressured into sex or decisions you don’t
want
• Being isolated from support
If any of this is happening, support is available. At
your own pace, on your own terms.
How are you doing? Stress, trauma, and
lack of support can affect your health.
You might notice:
• Feeling very low, numb, or unable to get
through the day
• Using substances more or in ways that feel
less safe, in order to cope
• Feeling constantly on edge or overwhelmed
• Thoughts about harming yourself
These are understandable and common responses.
You deserve care and support, not just
to “push through” on your own. Your healthcare
provider, a counselor, or an advocate can help
you find support that fits your situation.
Things that can help in the moment:
• If you feel overwhelmed, place your baby
in a crib or another safe space and take a
short break nearby
• Step into another room, breathe, or take a
few minutes to reset
• Reach out to someone you trust to talk
with or to come help you out
• If you’re unsure someone will be calm and
caring with your child, trust your instincts
You don’t have to do things perfectly in order
to be a good parent.
Your decisions matter
• Pregnancy and parenting decisions
should be yours.
• If someone is pressuring,
threatening, or trying to
control your choices about
your body or your pregnancy,
that’s not okay.
• You deserve to make decisions
without fear.
If you want support, a healthcare
provider or an advocate can help you talk
through options safely and privately.
